Bug Club for Juniors
Worthing Sailing Clubs youth training scheme was started in June 2009 when the club organised an open day to encourage more people to take up the sport of sailing. The club had borrowed 6 small dinghies called Bugs from Laser UK. The clubs Bosun was so impressed with them that he persuaded 5 stalwart members to sponsor them and we bought them there and then. Seeing the potential to increase the clubs membership the treasurer recommended that the club purchase them and they have been a great asset to the club in so much that we have achieved a 10% increase in membership.
We now have many fully qualified RYA Dinghy and Senior Instructors to teach sailing to children aged 8 to upwards and adults. Fun is the main goal in teaching that is carried out in a safe and controlled manner and we always have a patrol boat in attendance.
The Bug School (as we first called it) that runs from May to October has grown from 6 pupils to now having over 40 children in the school. We also have an annual Bug week in August where 24 children and their parents had lots of Fun and a fantastic time messing about in boats and each sailor was awarded a club certificate.
With recognised funding from the RYA the Club is now a fully operational RYA Training Centre.
With the help of dedicated club volunteers and the parents' involvement the School is achieving outstanding success so if you would like to give your children a wonderful experience or even learn to sail yourself and have lots of FUN please contact Duncan for more details.
