The Goodwin Pursuit

Published 10:52 on 2 Nov 2026

Trophy Race Report -The Goodwin Pursuit, 1st November 2026

The Goodwin Pursuit is an annual race, but a regular race it is not…

With a handicap start, all boats start together

And the maths bit comes in when we're done.

A pursuit turns that round, with the maths at the start

Now the perfect boats finish as one.

Noddy boats go off first, then you mob in the middle

Faster set off laster, you see?

You should not fret or fray if you're not first away

Overtaking en route is the key.

Chris Halfknight releases each craft one by one

By waving or whistle or yell

But some have forgotten what time they are scheduled

So just go when they fancy the swell

Oh which rope is this, cries poor Liz on the shore

Pretending she hasn't a clue

Is the sail that white sheet, you said that sheet's a rope??

Is the uphaul the yellow or blue?

For those who were listening the course was made clear

And gates were required to go through

No name, no pack drills for those failing these rules

I lie: Mercedes, Marcus, Andy (B) it was you!

To the victor the spoils, to the rest happy sailing

The result? I will state as it is:

Notwithstanding the gnashing and fretting and wailing

The winner in fact was said Liz!
